*Developing Mathematics Learners and Doers

Generic Event Image
Description: *Developing Mathematics Learners and Doers Date: Oct. 24, 2019 Time: 9am - 3pm Location: Brick Twp. PD Center Presenter: Dorian Giorgio - FEA Consultant Fee: $149 Students have become comfortable in following procedures and waiting out teachers during math instruction. But math education today stresses the need for students to become doers of math, requiring teachers to do more than simply leading students to the right answer. Research shows that students need to become engaged in productive and mathematical discourse during lessons, while stressing that we are not learning math but are learning how to think like mathematicians. Providing lessons that offer these opportunities is a new focus for math instruction, but teachers are often frustrated when trying to plan lessons that offer these opportunities. This workshop offers a model lesson designed to engage teachers in productive struggle & math discourse, then provide strategies.
