In the current online learning environment, culturally responsive teaching and leading is essential. In this session, educators will explore the impact of cultural dynamics on student learning and will examine the seven most common assumptions and biases that are embedded into instruction and remain in place until consciously and purposefully interrupted. Central to this workshop is a series of practical strategies for how teachers can disrupt these biases to support pro-social, culturally affirming classrooms in a face-to-face or virtual learning environment.

This workshop, building on a foundation of culturally responsive practices, focuses on how to engage conversations on race and intervene when said discussions become hurtful or oppressive. To achieve these objectives, this workshop is divided into two parts. During the first two hours, participants pursue a deeper dive into the cultural dynamics that define our understanding of race and impede our ability to constructively engage race-conscious conversations. During the last two hours, participants are given strategies for disrupting racialized narratives and scenarios within which to practice using these strategies.
