Since 1968, the US Department of Education has maintained a Civil Rights Database. This database documents vital school activities that includes disaggregated information on the rate and outcomes of disciplinary infractions. This data comes from school districts across the nation. It provides a clear pattern which confirms that Black and Latino students and students with special needs receive more severe and more frequent discipline than white peers who commit the same offenses.
This half day workshop explores the "whys?" behind this damaging phenomena and then transitions to a discussion on research-based and practitioner-confirmed alternative strategies to managing disciplinary infractions.

This full day workshop is intended for educators who seek to expand their understanding of ethnic diversity and its relationship to school culture, climate, and successful instructional practices. Its purpose is to enable responsible adults to better avert ethnic-based HIB infractions and the relational tensions that arise from the pervasive use of inflammatory behaviors. To achieve these objectives, this workshop is divided into two parts. The morning session will focus on what teachers can do in the classroom to support culturally responsive behaviors that reduce the expression of bias and promote a culture of respect. In the afternoon session, participants will explore strategies to be used with and among students that both deter and address the use of inflammatory speech
