Improving student learning and strengthening teacher practice require a systemic and sustainable process, driven by the collaborative work of PLCs and shared leadership. The Connected Action Roadmap (CAR) provides a coherent approach to curriculum, instruction, assessment and school climate that builds a common language and understanding and shifts the focus of educators from compliance and programs to process and effective practices. Endorsed by the NJ Department of Education and the leading educational organizations across the state, the CAR framework was recently used by teams of educators from across the state, working with the NJDOE to develop K-12 ELA and Math instructional units with common student learning objectives derived from the NJ Student Learning Standards.

This workshop focuses on strategies for immediate use. It can be replicated in districts to enhance rapport, instruction, and assessment practices to improve climate and instructional learning outcomes for students. Research-based content (Marzano, Reeves, etc.) support strong instructional foundations for administrators. Teacher evaluation, using evidence to support observations and strengthening teacher practice are emphasized as well as improving school climate. With school anxiety and school refusal on the rise, this workshop provides strategies for teachers to use on a daily basis to engage reluctant learners.

During this session, participants will work with their own performance reports* to apply a “step-by-step” process to interpret each section of the NJ Performance Report. Strategies and tools for developing a plan to promote school improvement will then be shared and next steps explored including communicating the performance report to district faculty and other stakeholder groups. *Participants should bring a printed or electronic copy of their own performance reports.
